TORONTO — The mayor of Toronto says the local police force is about to receive more money to help combat rising gun crime in the city.
John Tory says the federal, provincial and municipal governments have teamed up to provide $4.5 million in funding.
Tory says the money will be put towards immediate plans to tackle gun crime.
Over the recent long weekend alone, police recorded 14 separate shootings across the city that injured 17 people.
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders says he welcomes the funding, but did not immediately provide details on how the money will be spent.
He says he will release a plan to address gun violence in the coming days.
