Algoma U’s Annual Homecoming This Weekend!

Algoma University’s annual Homecoming celebration kicks-off this Thursday, September 26th. Over the course of three days, the University will host a variety of events for alumni, students, and the broader Algoma U community. New this year is a Toronto-based Homecoming tailgate social and football game on Saturday, September 28th when the Toronto Argonauts take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders at BMO Field.

“We’re really excited for this week’s Homecoming 2019 celebration,” said Patrick Murray, Chair of the Algoma University Alumni Council. “Our annual Homecoming festivities continue to grow. With an action-packed lineup, we look forward to reconnecting with members of our ever-growing alumni family.  We encourage everyone to attend and join us for a great time!”

Homecoming Events:

Thursday, September 26th

Sign-Making Night

Time: 6:00 – 9:00 pm

Location: Algoma University, Shingwauk Auditorium

Algoma University Alumni Council would like to invite our alumni out to join us for our first-ever Homecoming sign-making night!  Come get creative and choose a wooden sign to decorate. There will be complimentary appetizers and beverages available. This event has limited space, so make sure you register as soon as possible! Alumni Hockey Game

Time: 8:30 – 9:30 pm

Location: John Rhodes Community Centre, Arena 1

The Algoma University Alumni Hockey Game is back by popular demand! We have players coming from near and far, and some were even coached by George Leach himself in the ’70s and ’80s! Come out and support your favourite players, as they lace up for Algoma U. There will be a social to follow the game upstairs at Icebreakers Pub, with appetizers and a cash bar. Come out and cheer on your Algoma U Alumni!

Friday, September 27th

Anishinaabe Dinner

Time: 5:30 – 8:30 pm

Location: Algoma University, Great-West Life Amphitheatre

The Alumni Council and the Anishinaabe Initiatives Division have partnered together to bring you an evening of celebrating Anishinaabe cuisine and culture. Come out and join us for a traditionally-inspired meal and teaching by Elder Shirley Horn. Don’t miss this evening of great food and fellowship. Doors open at 5:30 and dinner starts at 6:00 pm.

Thunderbird Basketball Classic

Location: Algoma University, George Leach Centre (GLC)

Algoma University is pleased to host the Thunderbird Basketball Classic. Join us for three days of highly competitive women’s basketball, featuring teams from Nipissing University, Laurentian University, Humber College, and Algoma University. Bring your school spirit and cheer on our Algoma U Women’s Thunderbirds as they compete for the tournament championship.

Sept. 27th – Nipissing vs Laurentian – 6:00 pm

Humber vs Algoma – 8:00 pm

Sept. 28th – Laurentian vs Humber – 5:00 pm

Nipissing vs Algoma – 7:00 pm *

*(A special celebration will take place to honour our Algoma U Thunderbird Alumni during half time)

Sept. 29th – Nipissing vs Humber – 10:00 am

Laurentian vs Algoma – 12:00 pm

Acoustic Open Mic Night

Time: 8:30 – 12:00 am

Location: Algoma University, Speakeasy

Cost: Donations to the Algoma University Student Food Bank

Calling all musicians! Algoma University Alumni Council will be hosting the sixth annual Acoustic Open Mic Night with great cash prizes! The third-place finisher will be awarded $200, the second-place finisher will win $300, and the grand first-place prize winner will receive $500. All performances must be done in an acoustic arrangement and performers will be given a 10-minute performance slot. Come out early to secure a spot; performance slots will be drawn at random. Come and showcase your talent or sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Saturday, September 28th
Soccer Games – Algoma U vs. Brock University

Time: Women’s Game – 1:00 pm / Men’s Game – 3:00 pm

Location: Superior Heights Field

Come out and cheer on our Algoma U Thunderbirds varsity soccer teams as they take on the Brock Badgers. Both our men’s and women’s teams will be pumped-up to play in this year’s Homecoming games. Be sure to join us at the field for the Pre-Game Party, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm! There will be food from BeaverTails and music from Trevor Tchir. Bus transportation from campus will be provided to and from the games at 11:15 am and 12:15 pm, returning to campus at 5:00 pm., so hop on and come cheer for our Algoma U Thunderbirds!

Alumni Basketball Game

Time: 3:00 pm

Location: Algoma University, George Leach Centre (GLC)

Be sure to join us for our annual Homecoming celebration – The Alumni Basketball Game! This event brings back your favourite  Algoma U Thunderbirds from years past. This year, our men will once again take to the court in a friendly but competitive game of basketball. It is always fun to watch, and always a pleasure to welcome back our Thunderbird Alumni. You won’t want to miss this event! Bring your Algoma U spirit and cheer our teams on!

Toronto Argonauts vs Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Game

Time: 7:00 pm (pre-game tailgate party 5:30)

Location: BMO Field Brampton

New to the line-up, we are pleased to be hosting a special Homecoming event this year in Toronto. Join us for an evening of fun as we cheer on the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders. This event is open to Algoma U alumni and students from our Brampton campus and will begin with a pre-game social, and end with a photo on BMO Field. Tickets are limited, so call early to register (Alumni Office at 705-949-2301, ext 4125).

The fun will begin with a pre-game social.   Those who have registered in advance are to meet at Gate 1 at 5:30 to pick-up their tickets and be escorted to the tailgate party.  A group photo will also take place on BMO field.
