The Soo Greyhounds started their 2019-2020 season in winning fashion, taking down the Flint Firebirds by a score of 6-3.
Prior to puck drop, the Sault Ste. Marie’s Downtown Association organized a block party for fans to visit before entering the GFL Memorial Garden’s doors.
Two Hounds from the 2019 draft class got their first taste of OHL action Friday night, with the likes of 2003 birth year Jacob Holmes and Marc Boudreau.
For Boudreau, it took him two shifts and just under three minutes into the first period for the rookie to notch his first OHL goal, and to open the scoring for the game.
The Hounds took a 16-5 shot advantage into the second period, but more importantly, a two goal lead with Tye Kartye’s power play marker. Smart, short passes were the key to success in the first twenty minutes of the new campaign.
A night of firsts would continue, as free agent signing Tanner Dickinson would collect his firs OHL point with an assist on Cullen McLean’s second period goal. Sault native and assistant captain Cole MacKay would pick up the other assist.
That three goal lead would not be enjoyed for long as Firebirds Durham and Roberts scored a mere 17 seconds apart, making it a one goal game early in the second period.
The Hounds would have the last laugh of the frame as O’Rourke ripped a shot from the blue line for his first goal assisted by Pytlik and Roth on the power play.
The third period had a tally on score sheet quickly as the Hounds continued their fast pace play, with Holden Wale finding open ice on a beautiful pace from Pytlik. Wale was off to the races on a breakaway and found the back of the net, restoring the three goal lead.
The two teams would trade goals with Morgan and McLean scoring, but the Hounds would hang on to their three goal victory. 6-3 final.
Next up for the Hounds, the North Bay Battalion, Saturday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
Notes: Starting lineup for the Hounds saw Pytlik centre a line with Roth and Trott, LeGuerrier and O’Rourke manned the blue line, with Propp minding the crease.
Barrett Hayton is still with the Arizona Coyotes as he continues to try and crack their opening night roster. There is no time table on the captain’s return to the Sault. Hayton has one assist and three shots on goal in two preseason games.
