In their continuing efforts to engage Veterans, their families, stakeholder and service providers, the Veteran Family program, along with Veterans Affairs Canada, Operational Stress Injury Social Support Family Peer program, and the Legion Service Bureau and Algoma Veteran Association, will be once again celebrating Veteran Family Week in Sault Ste. Marie, the week of September 9th, 2019.
This year, the Veteran Family Program will be hosting a Mental Health First Aid Veteran Community course on September 9th and 10th. Mental Health First Aid is targeted towards members of the Veteran community, caregivers, family members, support persons, professionals and anyone who interacts with Veterans and their families. Instructor, and Veteran Family Program Coordinator, Tina Thomason states “this valuable course teaches critical skills in how to respond to a mental health crisis, and how to begin a dialogue about mental health in the context of military and veteran culture”. Members of the public can register for this complimentary course by contacting Tina at [email protected].
They will also be visiting stakeholders and partners in the Sault Ste. Marie area, sharing information, resources, materials and awesome swag. “We are excited to get out into the community and meet with potential clients and stakeholders who play a vital role in best supporting our veterans and their families, and continue to strengthen the network of support available for this population” said Veteran Family Program Coordinator Carrie Gray.
If you would like them to stop by your organization to provide a presentation or information, please contact Carrie at [email protected].
The importance of Veteran Family Week will be officially marked by a presentation and a reading of the proclamation at City Council on Monday, September 9th, 2019.
“Veteran Family Week is an opportunity to honour the men and women who have served our country, along with promoting awareness of the important role of Veteran families and the sacrifices they make as well. On behalf of City Council and the residents of Sault Ste. Marie, I want to thank our Veterans and their family members, and I encourage the community at large to support the events planned for Veteran Family Week,” said Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Christian Provenzano.
