Recycling collection day amendments commence November 4

The City of Sault Ste. Marie reminds residents that amendments to the collection day for recycling will commence the week of November 4, 2019.

Garbage and recycling collection will occur on different days. While the garbage collection day will remain the same, recycling collection will change to the next business day after waste collection. Below outlines the amended scheduling changes:
Waste Collection Day
Recycling Collection Day

Waste Collection Day                   Recycling Collection Day

Monday                                              Tuesday

Tuesday                                              Wednesday

Wednesday                                           Thursday

Thursday                                               Friday

Friday                                                   Monday

As the City has moved to automated garbage collection, the change in the recycling schedule helps to facilitate space at the width of resident’s driveways particularly in the winter months. For more information visit or contact Public Works at 705-759-5201.

  1. I can’t believe how many people are so upset about this… I can’t understand it. Is it that much of an inconvenience to walk down your driveway twice a week? If this is the one of the biggest problems in your lives consider yourself lucky. Or maybe some people aren’t happy unless they are complaining about something.

  2. The Board of Works might also like to inform the public that we no longer recycle Styrofoam anywhere in the City. It has stopped being taken at the Hazardous Waste Depot as well which I found out when I drove all the way out there to drop some off last week. Seems that now you will be putting the Styrofoam in your garbage on pick up day so we can again pollute our land fill with more non-bio- degradable plastic. City Hall has not put out any public notice on this – it’s very conveniently only posted on one of their obscure websites.

  3. You poor, poor people. Instead of making 2 trips on the same day, you have to make 1 on 2 days. What terrible, terrible hardship!! Just wait until the Soo gets on board pretty much every other city in Ontario and we have a THIRD contained for organics!!! LOL! I can hear it all now.

  4. In my area I have seen the blue recycling bags thrown in the same compartment of the truck as regular garbage.
What does eventually get recycled isn’t self supporting and ends up costing the taxpayers a lot of money.

  5. No real reason to moan… in the UK they have a garbage bin, a recycle bin, a yard compost bin and a food compost bin and the garbage one is the only one picked up weekly they alternate the others on different weeks!
