Last evening and into the early morning, Saultites took to social media to share videos of flooding as the result of a strong storm system which brought thunder, lightning and heavy rains into the area. In a Sault Ste. Marie Conservation Authority statement, the Sault area has seen 90-135mm of rain so far with more expected today.
Some of the videos show areas such as Station Mall, Bay Street, lower St. George’s Avenue and the underpass hit hard as storm systems reached capacity and struggled to keep up up with the volume of runoff over such a short period of time. Vehicles can be seen stalled in high water and even someone taking advantage to the opportunity to go for a paddle in their kayak.
Public Works crews are out in full force cleaning up debris from roadways and assessing any damage from the storm.
