Prior to the start of Monday evening’s council meeting, Coun. Luke Dufour inquired about the city’s stance on the recent news of Agero’s closing, laying off 300 local employees who’s jobs are being moved to Tennessee and Arizona.
In response, City CAO for Community Development and Enterprise Services, Tom Vair, said that the both the City and the Economic Development Corporation are on-board with helping these people out.
“I can say that we have reached out to the folks at Agero,” Vair said, explaining that the call centre has agreed to give the city a list of the skill sets of its Sault workers, helping transition them into other job roles in the community.
“We’ll work together (with the Economic Development Corp.), with the labour force development coordinator, to see how we can look at transition programs and possible retraining programs as well,” he said, explaining that the EDC has also reached out to Agero.
