CTV, Jessica Allen apologize for her hockey remarks after Don Cherry’s firing

TORONTO — CTV says it is apologizing to anyone who was offended by comments made by a correspondent on its show The Social following the firing of hockey commentator Don Cherry.

During the program on Tuesday, Jessica Allen said she doesn’t “worship at the altar of hockey” and found in her experience that those who did “all tended to be white boys who weren’t, let’s say, very nice.”

She added that “they were not generally thoughtful, they were often bullies.”

CTV saaid Allen’s comments generated an extraordinary response. Many hockey parents expressed their anger.

“We would like to apologize to everyone who was offended by the remarks, and let you know that your feedback sparked much debate and introspection at The Social and CTV,” the network said in a statement Thursday.

“We won’t restrict our hosts from offering their opinions on an opinion show, but we will always listen to viewers when they offer theirs.”

Allen also issued an apology, saying when she spoke she was referring to hockey players she knew personally when she was in high school and university. She said Cherry reminded her of those players.

“I regret saying that my experiences were personal instead of underlying that they were specific episodes from determined moments with particular individuals,” she wrote.

“As a result, I offended many people. Not just our viewers, but parents, children, coaches, volunteers and hockey families everywhere. To you I apologize.”

Sportsnet fired Cherry this week following his comments on “Hockey Night in Canada,” which many felt were critical of immigrants for not wearing Remembrance Day poppies.

Cherry used the phrase, ‘You people,’ during the “Coach’s Corner” segment Saturday night but has denied that he was singling out visible minorities.

  1. Not good enough! Jessica Allen meant all hockey players and she is as prejudiced as they come!! Furthermore, for CTV to say that they will never stop one of their hosts from stating their opinions….What she said about her fellow Canadians was abhorrent and she has no business sitting on that panel!! CTV
    You need to take action!!!

  2. I love that show! It is literally an opinion show, she gave her opinion from her own experiences. Most people are having that kind of experience this week with extreme hockey fans. It hasn’t personally been my experience growing up because most of the hockey boys I knew were from Garden River and people from Garden River generally are kind and not egotistical. Other than that it was kids from other countries playing for the greyhounds. My friends kids are into hockey in Saskatchewan now and it’s a different story. They were being picked on by the other players to the point that it wasn’t fun and they quit. Guess it all depends where you play.

  3. I am someone who did think Don Cherry should not have called out new immigrants and meant to single out a group instead of telling “everyone” to respect the poppy.

I am also someone who thinks what this lady said was out of line. If you think an old man is being racist then following suit and making broad generalizations on air is probably going to backfire.

  4. Her racist outburst had nothing to do with what Don Cherry said and everything to do with what he stands for. She said it herself, disgusted that he’s “anti science” and “misogynistic”.
And of course, the ridiculous double standard that somehow coach’s corner ISN’T an opinion segment.
Thanks again, Prime Minister Blackface 👍

  5. Truth hurts these days and when it does people get offened even one own opinion people take offence too yet they are just words, people need to get the panties out of there asshole wasn’t like this back in the day … People will sue over compliments and say sexual harassment , world needs to loosen up.
