Special teams help Canadians beat Thunderbirds

After defeating the French River Rapids by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night in French River, the Soo Thunderbirds were right back in action on Sunday night as they made a trip to Chelmsford to take on the Rayside Balfour Canadians.

The Thunderbirds, who entered Sunday night’s game as the highest scoring team in the West Division with 102 goals for, took on the second highest scoring team in the West, the Rayside Balfour Canadians, who came in with 100 goals for.

Three power play goals and a shorthanded tally was the difference for the Canadians on Sunday night as they defeated the Thunderbirds by a score of 5-2 at Chelmsford Arena.

Zacharie Giroux had a power play goal and an assist for the Canadians while Matthew Belanger and Samuel Vachon had a power play goal each.

Oliver Smith notched his first career shorthanded goal for the Canadians while Nicholas DeGrazia had the only even strength tally.

Canadians captain Zachary Snow set up goals while Avery Chisholm and Mitchell Martin had one assist each.

Cooper Smyl and Avery Rebek had the goals for the Thunderbirds while Colton Hayes, Cam Findlay, Warner Young and MacKenzie Walkington all chipped in with one assist each.

Thunderbirds netminder Dakota Meyer gave up 5 goals on 39 shots in the loss while Canadians goaltender and former OHLer Cameron Lamour made 41 saves for his second straight victory.

The Thunderbirds will be back on John Rhodes ice on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. when they take on the top team in the NOJHL, the Powassan Voodoos.
