Senior’s Receive Hand Made Ornaments for Christmas

The Sault’s Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild made 179 handmade ornaments which were delivered to senior citizens and individuals with chronic illness to brighten up their holidays.

Susie Kainula, Chair of Comfort Quilts, a committee of the Guild that meets on the second Wednesday of each month Upstairs at Rome’s to volunteer their time and expertise to sew beautiful quilts which are donated to members of the community who have chronic illness or a life threatening illness in an effort to provide them with comfort, spearheaded the campaign.  “One of our Comfort Quilt volunteers and a Guild member, Julie Johnston, showed me some Christmas ornaments that she was making. I knew right away that it was something that our Guild members would enjoy doing” stated Kainula, “the Guild decided to give the ornaments to individuals in our community who receive Meals on Wheels, as our members regularly make placemats for them.” The Guild has donated 31handmade placemats so far this year to Meals on Wheels and 232 placemats last year.  “We wanted them to enjoy a little gift over the holidays” Kainula said, “I presented the idea at the November meeting of the Guild and by the middle of December I had received 179 handmade ornaments!” The Guild received so many beautiful ornaments that they were able to distribute 115 ornaments to their partner, Meals on Wheels. The balance was gifted to some residents of Extendicare Maple View nursing home.  Susie stated “they were really well received so the Guild is planning on beginning a little earlier next year.”

Stitches from the Heart Quilt Guild was formed in 1995 and has 137 members all of whom enjoy quilting.  We meet monthly on the fourth Monday of each month at the Senior’s Centre at 619 Bay Street at 7:00 p.m.  We welcome visitors and new members who are interested in quilting.  Each meeting features fun opportunities to develop new skills like Block of the Month, UFO challenges and wraps up with an inspiring members ‘show and share’.  Check out the quilts shown at last month’s meeting on our website at   or Facebook at
