Get funding to hire young Canadians for summer jobs in 2020


Starting today, employers can apply to get funding to hire young Canadians this summer

Terry Sheehan, MP for Sault Ste. Marie, is happy to advise that the Canada Summer Jobs CSJ 2020 application period for employers opens today, and will remain open until February 24, 2020. Investing in young people is key to ensuring Canada’s prosperity. Getting a good-quality summer job is a great way to help young Canadians gain valuable skills and workplace experience toward starting a meaningful career—all while helping build our workforce.

To get more youth working, small businesses with up to 50 employees, not-for-profit organizations and public-sector employers in Sault Ste. Marie can now apply for funding for Canada Summer Jobs 2020. Applications can be submitted until February 24, 2020.

The Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program creates summer job opportunities that provide valuable work experience for youth aged 15 to 30. These jobs help them gain the skills and experience they need to successfully join the workforce.

Providing high-quality jobs helps small businesses and not-for-profit organizations hire youth in quality jobs while also supporting our local communities. Employers are invited to submit applications that complement this year’s national priorities:

Organizations that provide services to or intend to hire youth who self-identify as being part of underrepresented groups or as having additional barriers to entering or staying in the labour market, as outlined below:

  • new immigrant / refugee youth (new is defined as having arrived in Canada in the past five years);
  • Indigenous youth;
  •  youth who have not completed high school;
  •  visible minorities / racialized youth;
  •  LGBTQ2 youth;
  •  women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); and,
  •  youth who have not previously been employed and for whom this would be their first job experience.
  • Opportunities offered by organizations that provide services to persons with disabilities or intend to hire youth with disabilities.
  • Opportunities for youth in rural areas, remote communities, or official language minority communities.
  • Opportunities offered by organizations that focus on protecting and conserving the environment.
  • Opportunities for youth to work in small businesses, in recognition of their contribution to the creation of jobs.

  1. Not-for-profit employers can receive funding for up to 100% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage and mandatory employment-related costs. Small businesses with up to 50 employees and public-sector employers can receive funding for up to 50% of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage.
  2. CSJ is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which was recently modernized to support youth, particularly those facing barriers, to transition to the labour market.
