Ontario will need to recall defective licence plates, cabinet minister says

TORONTO — The Ontario government says it will eventually have to recall newly issued licence plates that are difficult to read in low light.

Progressive Conservative House Leader Paul Calandra says the move will need to be made once the problem with the plates is fixed by the manufacturer, 3M Canada.

Calandra did not provide a timeline for the recall and acknowledged the province continues to distribute the faulty plates to drivers.

The problem was first raised over the weekend when an off-duty Kingston police officer posted a picture of an unreadable plate in a well-lit parking lot at night.

Calandra says the province currently has a supply of older model plates it could provide to drivers, but it’s hoping to avoid switching back to the previous version.

Premier Doug Ford’s office could not immediately say how many of the new plates have been distributed since they were initially released in early February.

  1. I heard Andrea Horvath and some of her MPP’s stating that these plates were a safety issue for our officers because they couldn’t run the plate to see who owns the vehicle. Well they sure do not care about the officers safety when the officers cannot see who or how many people are in the vehicle with the windows blacked out because of the tint. Polititians are whining losers.

  2. Just another don’t look beyond Toronto project. If you live in a Town that borders Michigan you know that they already have white on blue license plates. The new Ontario plates make it hard to tell the difference.

  3. Now Ford is blaming 3M. Meanwhile all of the other provinces who have their plates made by 3M have no problems. Something isn’t right here. Did 3M subcontract this job to Deco Labels? Poor colour scheme, poor design. This is on Ford, not 3M.

  4. What is wrong with our existing plates?? When you travel anywhere and see the blue on white plates you immediately identify with Ontario.
Yesterday, I saw the new license plate on a vehicle and first thought was…Oh must be someone from Michigan visiting the Soo then I realized it was Ontario’s new plate. I’m sure there are many other places this money would be better spent… Health Care.
What a waste of taxpayers dollars!

  5. What a waste of money, time and resources. Proper studies should have been done way before this point. Ridiculous and of course the government won’t take responsibility. Tired of all these flubs.
