There could be some big changes coming to the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.
The Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation says it’s planning a $5 million multi-stage upgrade of the airport that will include a hotel, a redesign of the parking lots and potentially attracting a new flight-training business.
Terry Bos, President of the Sault Airport Development Corporation said before any upgrades can be done and to accommodate the expansion major work to the sewer and water infrastructure at the airport is required.
No further details on the plan were released such as a time line , however Bos says partial funding is already secured through FedNor, with hopes of achieving the upgrades before 2025. Bos said the city has agreed to provide support through its economic development fund, and the airport board is awaiting word from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. for the provincial funding portion of the project.
If the project moves ahead, it could create up to 100 jobs at the airport. Negotiations are on-going for a leasing agreement with a hotel.
