Local “Sunshine List” Released

The annual Ontario public sector ‘Sunshine List’ has been released, showing just how many public service employees earn more than $100,000 a year, and in the city of Sault Ste. Marie, there are a lot of individuals who earn much more than this quota. In Sault Ste. Marie the Province lists 789 people earning $100,000 or more from the public service sector.

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

The act applies to the provincial government, Crown agencies and corporations, Ontario Power Generation and subsidiaries, publicly funded organizations such as hospitals, municipalities, school boards, universities and colleges, and not-for-profit organizations that receive $1 million or more, or receive between $120,000 and $1 million if the funding they receive is 10 per cent or more of their gross revenues.

  1. Why are there two Chief Administrative Officers working for the City? Wow to how much the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer – Public Works and Engineering makes..$180,081 in our pothole infested City. Also, the Director of Public Works isn’t listed here, $147, 027.40! Actually, there are a lot of people not listed in this article making over $100,000 per year.

    • Yeah, the list seems sparse. As long as 7-10 years ago, there were a couple of hospital RNs whose salary tipped over 100, 000.00, because of lots of seniority and willingness to work overtime shifts. They were listed. If that could happen back then, I’m sure it’s easy to make over this amount now.
