Protesters prepare to rally in Toronto against anti-black, Indigenous racism

TORONTO — A rally is set to take place in Toronto today in protest of what organizers describe as anti-black and anti-Indigenous racism around the world.

The protest, organized by a group dubbed Not Another Black Life, comes on the heels of high-profile, police-involved deaths in both Canada and the United States.

A Minnesota police officer is now facing a murder charge in the death of George Floyd, a black man caught on film pleading for air as an officer knelt on his neck.

And Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, who fell from the balcony of a 24th-floor Toronto apartment while police were in the home on Wednesday.

A lawyer representing Korchinski-Paquet’s family says her relatives do not want to see violence, only answers as to how and why she died.

Toronto Mayor John Tory called the community’s anger over her death understandable, describing anti-black racism as “a fact in our society” and encouraging protesters gathering this afternoon to practice physical distancing in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. Where is Doug Ford – why isn’t he calling these ‘protestors’ YAHOOS? Clearly he reserves that name for law-abiding taxpayers who correctly criticize his covid shutdowns because they are actually suffering. As for John Tory telling these miscreants to practice physical distancing, that’s as ridiculous as a homeowner telling a thief to wipe his shoes on the front rug before he loots the house. These people want an excuse to make trouble – any excuse will do. The woman who died was not murdered – she chose her own fate – others should not be blamed for her unfortunate choices. The country is in trouble and the politicians are making one foolish decision after another.

    • What a great solution…name calling. That should solve the problem. That woman had a name, Regis Korchinski-Paquet. There is an ongoing investigation. It has not been determined that she was not murdered. STOP SPREADING LIES. I see the protests have gotten your attention. Many people’s eyes will be opened and maybe even things will change regarding the brutality at the hands of police, although I doubt it. People are fed up with the corruption. People are sick and tired of the BS. People are angry. People have been pushed to the limit. The shutdowns are about trying to prevent the spread of a virus that is deadly to many. I guess the almighty buck means more to you than the health and lives of people. Greed is a terrible thing. Much of the world is in trouble…we’re in the midst of a pandemic!

  2. I would have loved to participate in this protest!! And Lillian Rhodes-Heatley, yes this is the time. You don’t wait for these incidents to be forgotten.

  3. Well as it stands in today’s society with every opportunity for equal rights for all, I think it’s ultimately the white heterosexual Christian male who is getting shafted from the equal rights. What happened to the concept of ‘Best person for the job’?

    • Jeff Dupre seriously are you for real?? Why burn down anything!! Anyone burning any building is as much a criminal as the person who committed this Haines crime!!! So let’s burn down our own buildings??? Those are our our buildings that we pay for how will that solve anything!! Absolutely ridiculous!!! Let’s not be like the Americans!! Let’s be smart!

    • Jeff Dupre not you as in You Yourself!! You as in You ( anyone) who starts any fire!! I think for the most part we are on the same page here! We just have some differences in the approach! No lives should be taken in such a manner! Burning any building, car, or anything for that matter only put more lives at risk!! What will that solve!! Now (you) risk others lives…paramedics, fireman and the General public!! Any of these being of all nationalities!!
A mans life was taken!! It was taken by a another man who happens to have been a police officer!! That does not make all police officers bad!! But protesting to the point of putting others lives in danger will solve what!!
Okay we are going in circles here!! I’m sure you can understand what I’m saying!

    • Shirley Beilhartz Cooke I agree but they just burned down the court house and city hall in Nashville Tennessee this could turn into civil war soon if not corrected

  4. I just hope the people participating aren’t as brainless as some of the ones in the States have been recently.. looters and rioters should be arrested, and given severe consequences.
