Trudeau announces ban on 1,500 types of ‘military-style’ guns

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is banning a range of assault-style guns, with an order that takes effect immediately.

The cabinet order he described in a Friday-morning announcement doesn’t forbid owning any of 1,500 “military-style” weapons and their variants but it does forbid them to be used and halts the trade in them.

“Today we are closing the market for military grade assault weapons in Canada,” Trudeau said.

He said the order has a two-year amnesty period for current owners, and there will be a compensation program that will require a bill passed in Parliament.

In the meantime, they can be exported, returned to manufacturers, and transported only to deactivate them or get rid of them. In certain limited circumstances, they can be used for hunting.

Trudeau cited numerous mass shootings, from Ecole Polytechnique in 1989 to the killings in Nova Scotia last week, as the reasons for the move. Some guns have legitimate uses, including in recreational shooting, he said, “but you don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer.”

Stricter controls on firearms were promised in the Liberals’ election campaign platform last fall.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said guns that have no use in sport shooting have been a growing part of the Canadian market. The former chief of the Toronto police said he’s heard concerns about the militarization of police forces and that’s a direct response to the militarization of society.

  1. Guns NEVER have killed anything…..including humans….. it’s the human factor thrown into the equation…..Humans kill Humans….i know … BIG SURPRISE EHHHH? Our Canadian governments let criminals out of jail way too easily ( oh there is a virus happening, let them out . Like they give a flying **** about the social distancing rule or any other rule) and people who have mental issues ( knowlingly by the government ) are given legal drugs every day and thrown back onto the street to fend for themselves….its sad…. because they should be in controlled environments not walking freely lost and out of control. We should be charging our governments with being incompetent ,if not criminally competent, and put OUR OFFICIALS to a permanent sleep. WAKE UP PEOPLE… the rich
( Billionaires ) in bed with Goverments are getting worried…..Canadian’s need to join the USA and adopt the 2nd AMMENDMENT.

  2. I for one am glad to see this ban. Although it’s true that it won’t stop all gun violence, It’s a start. Any move to restrict violence is a good one. No one needs military style guns,

  3. Sometimes I wonder if all the liberals that are for this know anything about guns? I look below and see how uneducated people really are in this matter, just like how Justin Trudeau is uneducated to make these decisions. Yes, there was a violent crime committed with a gun, but there are many crimes committed with guns, most of time from criminals!

There are also many deaths from vehicles, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. But we don’t have a mass ban on them!

If your uneducated on the matter you shouldn’t even have an opinion! Because Canada has extremely solid gun laws already in place, and for a person to think a gun looks and sounds scary, isn’t a good enough reason to have them banned!

    • I am a hunter and have never used or ever seen anyone use any of the guns banned (pictured here)

It is simple if you want to posses a military style semi automatic rifle…

      Move to Michigan!

    • Trudeau didn’t ban military guns. Automatic rifles and magazines for rifles over 5 rounds are already banned and illegal. Plus he sidestepped parliament and the democratic process to do this. Considering that over 90% of gun deaths are from hand guns or illegally acquired guns how does cracking down on licenced owners with their legally registered fire arms make us safer?

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
      List of 7 items:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent.
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information…. The NY Sullivan Act intended to tip the advantage toward Irish criminals, away from Italian criminals, and far away from the lawful.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note, before it’s too late!
The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.
With guns, we are ‘citizens’. Without them, we are ‘subjects’.
During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!
If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends.

  4. this idiotic ban would not have any effect and changing the outcome of that same crime if it happened again, unlicensed gun owner, with illegally imported firearms, knee jerk reaction does absolutely nothing.

    • David Coccimiglio those guns are already illegal in Canada. The ban is referring to rifles that have black stocks and semi automatic. The same ones that grandpa used to use, except a black stock on it. The .308 is a popular cartridge In “assault rifles”. Semi auto by the way refers to one trigger pull, one bullet Down range. These 200 rounds per minute guns have been illegal in Canada for as long as I’ve been a gun enthusiast. They are fully auto guns. Which are illegal and have been illegal for ages. The problem lies with people that don’t understand that just because a gun looks black and scary, doesn’t mean it is an “assault rifle”. Many black stock guns are in the exact same calibers as hunting rifles. And one trigger pull still equals one bullet down range. That doesn’t change.

    • David Coccimiglio when the final list comes out I’ll be better able to answer that. But there will be many guns and calibers that are banned that are simply modified hunting rifles with black stocks. The fact remains that there is not a legal fully automatic gun in Canada right now. Not one. But most people don’t know that. They think you can just spray and pray, when in fact you have to pull that trigger for every bullet. So even this AR 15 that they mentioned in the press conference, it’s a semi auto, one pull , one bullet. The legal magazine capacity is 10 bullets. Not to say that illegal magazines don’t make it into Canada that hold 20-50 cartridges, but as soon as you put that in the gun it is a prohibited weapon. Absolutely illegal to use or own. So a law abiding gun enthusiast wouldn’t own that anyways, only a criminal would.

    • Dorothy Bianchi just for the record Canadian law does not recognize the 2 phases assault style or military style that is a left wing media word , just cause they look big and bad doesn’t mean they are bad , everyone of these ban guns meets the requirements of every other hunting rifle still legal

    • Dorothy Bianchi They are not assault weapons nor are they military weapons they are fooling you people by telling you that , look at headlines (assault style , military style )they look like assault weapons and they look like military weapons but they are normal rifles

    • Martin Verdecchia you’re right it’s not my decision to make, it’s the Prime Minister and he already made it. I have my beliefs and I do have a right to those and to freedom of speech. Chill man!

    • Dorothy Bianchi this is a assault style 12 guage shotgun by Remington it holds the same amount of shells as a regular looking shotgun , but it looks dangerous because it has a pistil grip big scary clip but it’s legal

    • Dorothy Bianchi It pisses me off because this is not going to do nothing to stop crime but Justin let out all the murderers and rapists and child molesters out of prison because he didn’t want them to get COVID-19 the people that cut off halloms head three or four years ago are walking around our city free right now but I guess you’re OK with that

    • Martin Verdecchia don’t put words in my mouth, I’m not talking about prisons here…but if you must, I’d like to see the right honourable Ralph Goodall in for a week or so w some of those who murdered. And I don’t agree that any violent offender should walk…big deal if they are subject to the virus….we all are to a degree.

    • Dorothy Bianchi My point isn’t against you it’s that Trudeau thinks that banning these guns is going to stop crime and it won’t , but letting these criminals out of prison is certainly going to create more crime , it makes no sense at all

    • Martin Verdecchia I think it’s a step in the right direction…all I know are hunting guns since everyone hunted in my family. Maybe he isn’t as familiar w the assault guns as some. Stop selling assault rifles, or however you want to label them and then bear down on those in circulation. I may be naive, my jargon is not in league but I sure want any guns except for hunting gone.

    • Dorothy Bianchi assault rifles were already banned in 1996 so there aren’t any out there , just ones that look like assault rifles are out there what is not to get these can all be used for hunting they just look scary Trudo just had to do something to make himself look good after the mass shooting in the legal gun owners had to pay the price

    • Martin Verdecchia yes, that’s his mo…I’m not fond of him…he hasn’t done a good job. But, he has done as good a job as any with this COVID outbreak…I take hope where I can get it. Thanks for the lesson, though, on guns…take care.

    • Karen McPhee Grant It shouldn’t be your decision to make if somebody bought those guns legally no matter for whatever reason you shouldn’t have a say whether he should have them or not this is a free country last a checked but not under Trudo’s leader ship is a free anymore what if I said I don’t want you to have bicycles anymore because they’re dangerous and I don’t like , guns don’t kill people , people do , Maybe Trudeau should be focussing more of his attention on dealing with criminals remember the gentleman who had his head cut off 3 or 4 years ago in the city all those guys are walking the streets today because Trudo didn’t want them to be in prison in case they would catch the COVID-19 that makes so much more sense don’t ya think

    • You still haven’t given one good reason for through general population to have them. “I want” is not a reason. I grew up in a hunting family. I learned to shoot a 22 when I was 10. Most of my family are still hunters. Not ONE feels a need for military style guns. You’re living in the wrong country. Want to play with that kind of weaponry? Join through Canadian Forces.

    • Karen McPhee Grant there doesn’t have to be a reason maybe they collect them maybe the hunt with them maybe they target practice with them , There is nothing different with these guns and regular guns except they look scary they don’t hold more bullets they don’t rapidfire the media tells you their assault style and military style what does style mean to you it’s a style it’s like a dress code they just look different than a regular gun

    • My father hunted and we target shot as kids, we never needed assault style weapons to do either. These weapons in the hands of people with bad intentions towards others are dangerous, the military use them because they are the military not private citizens.

    • Renaldo Taurozzi another brainwashed liberal assault weapons were all banned in 1996 ffs , there are none just guns that look like assault weapons and military weapons, they are the same as regular rifles

    • Karen McPhee Grant how about sport shooting, hunting, general protection from bears, wolves, pest, etc. You realize the strict laws behind owning a gun right? There is know such thing as a military style weapon, that’s a term fed to you to make it scary or something we shouldn’t own! Wake up!

    • Renaldo Taurozzi another one who needs to educate themselves on guns! Well I guess we shouldn’t have cars that are really fast, like a sports car because that’s the equivalent of saying military style guns..

    • Karen McPhee Grant they’re the same guns but different style. Comfort, style, precision etc, the guns look has nothing to do with it being able to kill more. Stop comparing your dads shotguns and rifles from the civil war to new age tech!

  5. Normal rifles shotguns , and a few other guns are great. But. 100 mag clips automatic guns. We don’t need , and if they would enforce the law with people using gun to commit crimes. 5 yrs just for having the gun. And extra for crime.

  6. So here is the math. I listen to CBC interview today with someone who claims he is a lawyer, a dumb one in my opinion; he unequivocally stated that assault rifles are not the problem! He states that there is no such description of an ‘assault rifle’ in the Canadian law! Whaaaat? And that an assault rifle cannot kill a deer with the caliber of the bullet it uses! Hmmm I thought you just said there were no ‘assault rifles’ in Canada! Dick head idiot!
They are not shooting at deer they are shooting at people.
There are 86,000 assault rifles that are know in Canada (and who knows how many that are unknown) OK, OK Not everyone is a 3/4 ejit when it comes to using one. But lets say that like the rest of the populations that 10% of the owners suffer from metal illness – that is 8600 people right? So not all 8600 people are going to misused the artillery they have, for sure not all. Even if 10% of that population, the ones that own assault rifles and have a mental illness, that would be 860. Right? Or even 1% of that number – 8.6. By banning all Assault rifles that is 8.6 lives that will be saved. Because we have a Prime Minister that has the balls to stand up to the lobbyists …. Good on him. Shame on anyone who tries to defend the acceptance of assault rifles. Next Hand guns …

  7. I wish to hell we could ban Trudeau that damn easy he’s by far the worst thing that ever happened to Canada, even worse than Pierre. Justin is anti – Canadian in everything he does.

    • Richard Zeppa really? Why is it your or anyone elses business what people own. Criminals don’t legally purchase guns to commit crimes. Using this last mass shooting for example, he didnt have a PAL so could not purchase/own guns. So one might ask where he got his then, well from the U.S. and Canada illegally. Further to your comment, killings aside, there are people who just do competion/recreational shooting with these types of weapons. Trudeau only targets law abiding citizens and not going after the real threat… the criminals. Just something to chew on. Not attacking you just letting you know that there are many uses for many weapons. Besides, if we treated everything with the same mentality as guns, we wouldn’t be able to use a lot of things for example motor vehicle collisions kill someone approx. every 4 hours. Should we ban all vehicles? Firearm homicides kill someone every 2 DAYS! So as you can see its media manipulation, vehicles are far more deadly. Before someone chimes in and says … ya but guns can/do kill more people in a short period of time. So do airplane crashes. Hmmm

    • Joe Kelly we’ve had to many restrictions for too long. there should not be any limitations on what people own or what they do in there spare time. that icludes guns, drugs, explosives, cars. if someone commits a crime with them they get arrested, PERIOD. simply owning a china lake doenst make me a criminal!

    • Richard Zeppa with the stroke of a pen he just made millions of law abiding Canadian citizens criminals 😞 welcome to dictatorship!!!! This matter should have been dealt in parliament where a discussion should have been had!!! The act that happened in Nova Scotia was performed by someone that did not have a permit with a stroke of a pen he just put thousands of people out of work during a pandemic 😔 🙄 💜 CB

    • Karen McPhee Grant competition shooters, recreational shooters, collectors etc. As stated above it shouldn’t matter what you own if you are responsible with it. Arrest the people who take criminal actions and not the people who want to safely enjoy our supposed freedom!
