Members of the Algoma University Board of Governors gathered virtually this evening for both their Annual General Meeting and the final regular meeting of the 2019-20 academic year. In addition to updates on strategic enrolment management and fall term programming, highlights from the past year were shared with those present along with updates on newly refined strategic priorities for 2020-21.
Board members were informed of progress made by the University towards achieving 2020-21 enrolment projections, including higher than anticipated enrolment during the current spring term while managing a number of unanticipated impacts brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Board of Governors confirmed the strategic priorities presented this evening by the Senior Administration,” said David Nanang, outgoing Chair of the Board of Governors. “We are confident that these priorities will move us through the next year successfully. It is wonderful to be working with our Senate governance colleagues on the 2020-21 priorities. Our senior leadership team has done a wonderful job in articulating the results of our retreat and actionizing them for the upcoming year. Teamwork is what this is all about.”
During the Annual General Meeting, Shelley Schell, Commissioner of Finance and Treasurer for the City of Sault Ste. Marie was appointed as Chair for 2020-21, taking over for Dr. Nanang whose term had expired. Nanang has relocated to Sarnia, Ontario where he serves as Regional Director General with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Mike Moraca, Treasurer at Algoma Steel Inc., was appointed to fill the role of Vice-Chair previously held by Schell.
Vezina extended words of appreciation to all members of the Board of Governors for their guidance during a year of continued institutional growth and development while most recently providing sound leadership during an extremely challenging period as the post-secondary sector deals with the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.
The next regular meeting of the Board of Governors is scheduled for September 24, 2020.
