Coast Guard rescues three people from the water off St. Ignace


SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Mich. – This afternoon, Coast Guard Station St. Ignace rescued three people from the water near St. Ignace after they fell into the water nearly a mile from shore.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. EST, the Sector Sault Sainte Marie Command Center received a call that a three people on a pool inflatable had fallen into the water and were unable to get back onto the float. The people had drifted about 1500 yards from shore and were struggling to swim in to safety. A response boat from Station St. Ignace responded to the scene and quickly rescued the victims. They were taken to the St. Ignace marina in good condition.


“Even on seemingly nice days it is important to keep an eye on all weather conditions, including the wind,” said Captain Amy Florentino, Deputy Sector Commander. “In this case, our station crew arrived on scene within minutes to assist the persons in the water. No matter what craft you are using to enjoy your day on the water, remember to use all recommended safety gear, including life jackets.”
