TORONTO — As rent cheques come due, some are warning that Ontarians should prepare for a wave of evictions now that protections put in place earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic have been lifted.
The Opposition New Democrats say that because the provincial state of emergency has ended, evictions can start back up again today.
The NDP also says newly passed legislation, Bill 184, makes it easier for landlords to evict tenants who fall behind on a repayment plan.
The governing Progressive Conservatives have said the bill will help, not harm, tenants.
A spokeswoman for the premier says the bill “reinforces to landlords the necessity of exploring repayment agreements and maintaining tenancies – rather than resorting to evictions.”
Ivana Yelich says eviction orders going out now are mostly ones that were pending before the pandemic began.
they should have paid their rent, especially the ones on ow and odsp, you were given ur rent no reason not to pay
Actually the correct pronunciation is ” Jug-meat””, so!!!!! ,Anyways the cerb needs dealing with also, I have been called back to work, as I was a daytime day person I am now working 20 to 25 hours a week, about half the hours I use to have, no longer qualify for cerb because I am making over $1000 a month, yet the student workers who worked less hours before are now working and getting cerb, while living at home with mommy and daddy, they have no mortgage, house insurance, vehicle insurance, city tax payments, and they still qualify for cerb. Apparently if you refuse to go back to work or quit your job you are not eligible for cerb!!! Something needs to be corrected on this whole cerb situation!!!!!!!

Hang on to your shorts everyone, the fun just begining
why would there be evictions when people have money saved up
William Marty White … Not everyone has money to set aside.
True that. People on Cerb have bought some rather outrageously unnecessary things. Most of them don’t realize that, come next tax period, the government is expecting them to pay income tax on that money
Oh yeah, liberal, ndp , are clueless.Yes pc party …lol
So agree Frank Fata !Not good!😭🙏
Jug meet has the solution for trudope !!!!! Spend, spend, spend & then spend some more. These 2 cartoon characters are destroying this Country !!!!!!! And the koolaid drinkers see nothing wrong with that. My God !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Frank Fata are you commenting on the right article? I think you should put down the Koolaid.
Nicky Hurshman Yes indeed I am talking about the koolaid drinkers. Read about Jim Jones in 1978 in Guyana. Everyone drank the koolaid & we know how that ended up !!!!
This article is about evictions… not drinking koolaid… with this kind of rhetoric and childish name calling, it makes me happy that you’re not on city council anymore.
Frank Fata het maybe you should learned that Ford government and the municipalities is responsible for rent regulation .. not the federal government .. go back to school ..
You folks are missing the entire point when I speak of jug meet. Everything this guy ever brings forward has to do with more federal donations & adding to the $Trillion + debt. Does this ndp guy ever talk about ways to cut costs or reduce the debt ???? The answer is emphatically NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Frank Fata his name is Jagmeet. The moment you start calling people names, you lose all credibility on anything else you say
Frank Fata … You spoil the point you’re trying to make with childish alterations to people’s names.
James Sloan … Frank was a city councillor… He *should* know that.
Is it better to give corporations and oil sector billions of dollars so they can give their CEOs raises or severance pay while they cut and slash their north american workforces or help people stay in their homes. A stable home is number one way to prevent crime, and multitudes of of societal problems. Maybe, you sir, are missing the big picture
Jason Lawrence Keep drinking the lieberal koolaid !!!!!! It’s obviously working for trudope !!!!!
Thanks for the input frunk or however u spell it
👍❤️👌👏👏👏
