Ontario NDP Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation critic Sol Mamakwa wants Premier Doug Ford to address the concerns of First Nations over the quick passage of Bill 197.
First Nations leaders are calling out the Ford government for failing to consult with Indigenous people before rushing to pass the COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act which impacts treaty territories – without consultation.
“Essentially, Bill 197 is an illegal bill from my perspective,” says Mamakwa. “It has not met the legal consultation requirements under the Environmental Bill of Rights.”
Mamakwa is among eight Northern NDP MPPs to release a letter to Ford calling on the Premier to engage with First Nations leaders.
Mamakwa acknowledges that these are trying times. However, he adds that economic recovery should not come at the expense of First Nations.
“We are not against development – we just need to be at the table. We need to be consulted.”
