IMET Operation on First Avenue

Sault Police Station

On Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at 1:00pm members of the Integrated Municipal Enforcement Team conducted an operation at a single dwelling residence at 295 First Avenue.

This operation was a follow up inspection after IMET members attended on October 22, 2020 in regards to a gas leak. At that time no occupants were located inside the residence. Power and gas were turned off to the building. Observations made by members raised concerns about the safety of the property.

Follow up from the IMET on October 28, 2020, included members from the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services, City By-Law Enforcement Officers and Sault Ste. Marie Police, found the residence to be unsecured on arrival. No occupants were located inside the residence however, IMET members found clothing, property and used drug paraphernalia inside the residence. There was no power or heat to the residence. A candle was found lit, burning on a table.

Due to the condition of the residence, City By-law officers and Fire Services identified a number of infractions. The residence was boarded and secured.

The homeowner/landlord did attend and was made aware of the concerns and infractions.

  1. Now, if they’d get more aggressive on the rest of the derelict and poorly maintained rental properties owned by slumlords, maybe this city can have a better chance of starting to actually look inviting to outsiders.

I once sent a funny pic of a cat on someones porch roof on a Wellington E property to a friend in southern Ontario, and first thing they replied with was how run down that house was (and at that point in time, that house was occupied)
