Michigan’s Attorney General hopes people will continue to adhere to mask-wearing and social distancing measures in light of a recent Supreme Court decision.

The court decided Governor Gretchen Whitmer did not have the authority to issue or renew executive orders pertaining to COVID-19 beyond April 30th.

Because of the Michigan Supreme Court decision, a statement from the office of Attorney General Dana Nessel says the governor’s executive orders will no longer be enforced through criminal prosecution.

The statement says, however, that Nessel’s decision is not binding on other law enforcement agencies or state departments with independent enforcement authority.
