In an effort to safeguard the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Ontarians, the Province is encouraging Ontario residents to consider a “staycation.”
The Ontario government is exploring ways to provide Ontarians with support of up to 20 per cent for eligible Ontario tourism expenses with an eye on encouraging residents to explore their own province in 2021.
The rationale is that it will likely be safer to travel within Ontario’s borders before public health officials lift restrictions on national and international travel.
The 2020 Ontario Budget states that $150 million is being set aside for this initiative and that the government will be consulting with stakeholders about the details.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism-related industries have seen a decline of more than 280,000 net jobs between February and May – which represents a 37 per cent decline in jobs.
