Community Support is what The Sault Does Best

Local Business Helps Support a Grieving Family

By Colette Linden

Almost two-years ago, I moved from my home town of Hamilton where I was born and raised, to build a new life here in Sault Ste. Marie. I have gained several positive experiences and benefits since becoming a resident of the Sault.

By far, I am most proud to be a part of this community for its ability to support one another. This morning as I searched through several local Facebook groups looking for stories to share on the morning show, I came across yet another reason I am proud to call this community home.

A local business, GLISS Restaurant, is reaching out to the community for your help. Not for business growth or needs but to come to the aide of a local family who recently lost a great man. I immediately went to Google to search more about Carlos and truly had a hard time staying dry-eyed.

On January 21st, the City lost a proud man from our community. Carlos Arruda, a Father to four boys and husband to Trish, Carlos was born in Sault Ste. Marie.

He was raised in a Portuguese household with his parents and sisters and was a proud West End Boy.

Mr. Arruda’s obituary was filled with beautiful words and as I continued to read on, I learned that Carlos played endless hours of hockey on the outdoor rink, played basketball and stick ball and built friendships and memories that he cherished until his last.

A proud Knight, Carlos was an alumnus of St. Mary’s where he played football and continued to make lifelong friendships and memories. Carlos was a regular at the Memorial Gardens and a Super Fan of the Soo Greyhounds. He would regularly attend games however often miss out on the first period as he would stop to talk to everyone that he met from the parking lot to his seat.

In a wonderfully spirited and giving gesture, GLISS restaurant has stepped up to help the family.

This local restaurant posted the following message to their Facebook page:

Gliss will be donating $5 from every entree sold this weekend to the Family of Carlos Arruda . Get your orders in to support a great family.

Choosing items from the menu below, you can help the family by ordering tonight, Friday January 29th and tomorrow night Saturday, January 30th. This menu can be found on their Facebook page as well.

I applaud the generous support from GLISS Restaurant and in keeping with what the Sault does best, let’s rally together and support a local family through what is an extremely difficult time.

To order from this menu tonight and tomorrow in support of the Arruda Family, you can contact GLISS through their FaceBook page, website or by calling 705-759-0000.

In Carlos’ obituary, the family asked In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Carlos’ last request to see the boys finish school and to do well in life, that donations be made to an education fund for Carlos’ four sons.

Donations can be made to Melanie Ann Borowicz-Sibenik, Barrister & Solicitor in trust for Jordan, Ryan, Cole and Ethan Arruda. Donations can also be made online to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer at Sunnybrook Hospital at
