Saultonline received this wonderful submission from the family of Margaret Briel.
Margaret Briel was born January 13, 1921 in Sault Ste Marie, Ont to Concetta and Domenico Mizzi. Her parents migrated from Colpetrazzo, Italy in the Region of Umbria when they were both in their 20’s.
The oldest of 5 children, Marge did the best to help with the family as times were very tough. Once a week Marge would go to the relief store with “the wagon that daddy made” to get butter, bread, syrup and flour.
Marge married Albert Briel in March of 1939. Marge & Ab celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before the love of her life was taken by cancer in 1990. Marge continues to miss “her Ab” every day.
Family gatherings at Nana & Pappy’s were a weekly event for their family and her homemade gnocchi and sauce was always the star attraction. Everyone would go to Marge & Ab’s house for a full Italian spread that Marge would make from scratch…..of course there was always lots of food!
Known for her delicious pies (best pie crust ever!), Marge would make batches of pies and deliver them to all her neighbors on Florwin Drive where she resided for over 50 years.
Marge spent many years as the front receptionist at her brother Vic’s dentist office where she made life long friends and shared her infamous Tuna Pizza with staff & clients!
Marge’s friendliness and love for people was always surrounded by her food!!
In Marge’s younger adult years, she was an avid bowler who excelled at her Sport! Sporting her polka dot bowling ball, Marge was the first female bowler to score a perfect 300 game at the Roxy Bowling Lanes. This accomplishment wasn’t easy as a perfect score is a feat very difficult to obtain even today. Marge received many accolades for her talent in the bowling community and continued to bowl well into her later years.
The Mizzi Family is noted for their longevity as Marge’s Mother lived until she was 102 years old! She still has 2 surviving siblings. Her brother Mel is 98 years old and her sister Nancy is 96!
As the Matriarch of the Briel Family, Marge has shared many life stories of what she endured growing up through the Depression and many other milestones throughout her life. She has shared her recipes, love and compassion with her 2 children, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren & 1 great great grandchild.
Nana is loved by all and has always promoted “to respect each other, never hold grudges & forgive because life is too short!”
Marge now resides at Extendicare Mapleview and due to the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions, the family plans to host a big party for Marge to celebrate her milestone once we can safely gather. We know Nana will be very excited to receive her commemorative certificates from the Pope, Prime Minister and our Mayor!
“I LOVE EVERYONE & GOD BLESS!” from Marge Briel
Happy Birthday Marge from all of us at Superior Media
