January 10, 2021 ~ Sault Area Hospital (SAH) President and CEO, Wendy Hansson, who lives alone in Sault Ste. Marie travelled to visit her immediate family in British Columbia and attend prearranged medical appointments with clinicians with whom she has had long-standing relationships.

Sault Area Hospital’s Board Chair was aware and supportive of the travel arrangements, given the separation from her immediate family and for medical purposes.

Ms. Hansson followed public health guidelines and mitigated risk by isolating with her immediate household and is following post-travel self-isolation.

Prior to travel, plans were developed to ensure that the CEO would immediately return to the community if hospital operational requirements shifted.  SAH has protocols and practices to ensure continuity of operations in the event of absences by leadership.

Sault Area Hospital will not be commenting further at this time.

  1. And by the way, I wonder where our illustrious Prime Minister and his royal cohorts spent time at Christmas/New Years? Can’t wait for that news to break. Looking forward to his sincere apologies and blaming it on his privileged upbringing.

  2. You ask where is APH? Dr. Jennifer Loo of APH has been instructing schools in the Sault to remain closed, in contravention of Doug Ford’s instruction to open the schools in northern Ontario. Loo is so busy making up her own rules to restrict people that she doesn’t have the time or will to acknowledge the SAH CEO’s transgressions. How convenient for them both.

  3. Really, is anyone actually surprised??? Not only did she break the rules, but she got 2 weeks off in BC at full pay(“while seeing a Doctor”), and a further 2weeks off at full pay here in the Sault while she isolates.. And she probably “works” from home most of the time anyway.. What a plum job……

  4. We all were told to stay home, in our own bubble so to speak. Kids had to wave at grandparents from outside picture windows. I couldn’t get near Maple View to see a brother, strict security as a couple staffers tested positive, I understood. Why would the CEO of the local hospital not follow Ontario’s protocol? People are being ticketed across Canada for breaking the Covid rules. Let’s hope what seems to be unnecessary travel is investigated further. Ron.

  5. A high level manager from Public Health Canada recently took a Caribbean vacation. Her office is in charge of border health safety and disallowing cross border travel.
Our current leadership appears to be little more than hypocrites and scandal generators.
These are the people who are going to lead us out of a pandemic?

  6. Entitlement….these people who think they are above the rest of society….to often they say and do as they see fit to meet their own selfish end…”BULLIES”

  7. And what appointment couldn’t she get here in the Sault… Thinking that’s bs. Travels around Christmas for an appointment where your family happens to live… sure…

  8. Shame on Ms. Hansson and SAH. The rules should be the same for everyone. It should not be a case of do what I say, not what I do. How can one hope that everyone takes these rules seriously if certain people are allowed to break them.
Lots of us miss our family members, our friends, our neighbours but we are desperately trying to do the right thing by OBEYING THE RULES.

  9. A community leader (such as a hospital CEO) should not be using excuses to justify travel. Many of us are isolated from our families and we’ve had telephone appointments with our doctors.

This is another example of the rich/educated/elite believe that different rules apply to them than to us.

She should resign immediately, and without severance.

After that the board of the hospital should be investigated for “Sault Area Hospital’s Board Chair was aware and supportive of the travel arrangements”. This during the world’s worst pandemic in modern times.

Finally, if “SAH has protocols and practices to ensure continuity of operations in the event of absences by leadership” why are we paying > $300k for any CEO?

    • It tells me that this virus is just like any other virus.
It tells me it can be deadly to some but not to most.
It tells me that these medical workers know this and their actions prove it.
It also tells me that the recommendations not to travel and lockdowns are a farce.

    • “Ms. Hansson followed public health guidelines and mitigated risk by isolating with her immediate household and is following post-travel self-isolation.”

Am I not understanding health guidelines? Was there a 14 day isolation prior to visiting medical appointments and family in BC? And a 14 day isolation upon return?

This is the type of event that allows people who believe it’s all a hoax to thrive. And who is the Board Chair that allowed this? They are just as responsible for this fiasco as the CEO herself.

Where is APH on this? Let’s hear from them. So tired of do as I say not as I do people in power.
