Downtown Power Outage Result of Equipment Failure

Power Outage

An unplanned power outage in the downtown area last evening shortly after 8 p.m. was the result of equipment failure according to PUC. The outage left 156 customers in the following areas without power for about three hours:

  • Station Mall & ACR Senior Apartments
  • Credit Union
  • City Hall
  • Fire Hall #1
  • Essar Center
  • Queen Street West
  • Bay Street from St. Mary’s River Drive to Brock Street
  • Woodward
  • Brock Street east to Pim Street
  • and Bay Street south to the river

The power was restored at 11:23 p.m. after line crews were able to investigate and repair the failed equipment.

The PUC would like to remind customers:

  • Downed wires should always be considered energized or “live”, and extremely dangerous
  • Do not approach or drive over a downed power line and do not touch anything the power line may be in contact with
  • Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about powerline safety and the dangers that can be associated with power lines
  • Take all the necessary safety precautions during a power outage
