An unplanned power outage in the downtown area last evening shortly after 8 p.m. was the result of equipment failure according to PUC. The outage left 156 customers in the following areas without power for about three hours:
- Station Mall & ACR Senior Apartments
- Credit Union
- City Hall
- Fire Hall #1
- Essar Center
- Queen Street West
- Bay Street from St. Mary’s River Drive to Brock Street
- Woodward
- Brock Street east to Pim Street
- and Bay Street south to the river
The power was restored at 11:23 p.m. after line crews were able to investigate and repair the failed equipment.
The PUC would like to remind customers:
- Downed wires should always be considered energized or “live”, and extremely dangerous
- Do not approach or drive over a downed power line and do not touch anything the power line may be in contact with
- Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about powerline safety and the dangers that can be associated with power lines
- Take all the necessary safety precautions during a power outage
