Fred Dovigi, Dead at 71


A former city councillor in Sault Ste. Marie has died.  Fred Dovigi passed away Monday February 8th  at home, he was 71.

Dovigi ran for Sault Ste. Marie city council in wards 3 and 4 in the 1976 and 1978 municipal election  He was unsuccessful both times before winning a seat in Ward 4 in 1980. He served two terms as councillor.

In 2006, Dovigi threw his hat into the mayoral race against incumbent John Rowswell and challenger Debbie Amaroso. He placed third in that race and left the political scene.

Before entering local politics Dovigi taught for 33 years for the Algoma District School Board. Mostly at Korah Collegiate and Vocational School.

In later years, Dovigi became a local political analyst for ONNtv appearing on news programs and election coverage.
