Letter: Hilsinger calls for plan to avoid future COVID-based shut downs

A strategy and plan to avert future Covid based business shut downs.

To Premier Doug Ford, MPP Ross Romano, and circulated media,

COVID DECISION MAKERS ARE RELENTLESSLY APPEALING FOR PUBLIC COOPERATION, LEGISLATING LOCK DOWNS AND TARGETING HOT SPOTS…

All the while, the vast majority of the public is mentally and physically sicker, businesses crash and burn and CoVid is morphing into variants and mutations.  Vaccine supply, application and distribution issues are prevalent and whatever was known in the past is now a question for an advancing future and constant speculation.

VARIANT FEARS?  YEARLY VACCINATIONS?  HERD THIS AND PUSHBACK THAT!…

Those who address policy and legislate limitations for public movement do not have a strategy for an illness without an apparent end game.  As soon as community leaders think they have solutions and plans, they are confronted with more structural, logistical and medical issues.

THERE IS ONE CONSTANT….

Thousands of small and medium sized business entrepreneurs and many independent entrepreneurs who are normally employing hundreds of thousands of staff have been shut down or shackled.   Millions of dollars of ‘lock down stock’ has become worthless.  Thousands of former employees have become lost souls.  Innumerable businesses will not survive.

IT SHOULD NOW BE CLEAR WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH COVID, NOT SIMPLY TRY TO ERADICATE IT!…

Simply throwing life jacketed loans to shuttered businesses and condolences to the owners of these once robust and community based businesses, many being family enterprises, is not a solution to solving CoVid challenges. A strategy is needed now to manage the next two years, not just a week at a time.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THESE THOUSANDS OF BUSINESSES, CURRENTLY JUSTIFIED AS COLLATERAL DAMAGE COULD BE PARTNERS IN A LONGER TERM SOLUTION…

ISSUE A COVID OCCUPANCY PERMIT to allow businesses to remain open.

Using a simple website application form, the business would complete the application.

  1. Report the  volume of customer space. [height x width x depth].

–If you have aisles, submit length / width of aisle space.

–If you have seating, submit size of space for seating.

–If you are a business where customers are separated, measure lobby area.

2.     Report cubic feet per minute [cfm]  for air supply to this volume of space.

3.     Check off compliancy of  CoVid policies that are required  by government for the permit to remain valid, masking, sign in, directional etc.

Perhaps attach 2 pictures to support the registration.  Submit the application for approval.

Automatically receive an Occupancy Permit via return email.

In the new algorithmic world, the CoVid Occupancy Permit would calculate your occupancy limits and continued actions necessary for the business owner / operator to comply with the permit.

  • The permit would be posted at entrances.
  • The public would see a complaint number to call for violators of the trust.
  • Violators would face strong fines for dishonest submissions or non- compliant behaviors.
  • We do this with liquor licenses.  We do this with health licenses.
  • Let the doorways of our businesses declare our commitment for this trust.

WE ARE NOW, JUSTIFIABLY, IN ALL OF THIS TOGETHER FOR THE LONG RUN.

WE WOULD ALL BE WORKING TO KEEP THE ECONOMY OPEN AND SAFE AND VIBRANT.

Responsible businesses who want to participate in predictability and consumers who want confirmation of safety will support such a plan.  Governments could eventually pull back on bail outs so former programs are converted to positive new investments with such a permit system.

  1. Actually she is sending out an alarm on behalf of millions of canadians involved in businesses that are on the brink of financial ruin. Small business wants to be part of the solution , not the problem. You have to provide data showing that the businesses being shut down are the reason for the spread. We are a year in and things don’t seem to be getting better. As Hilsinger stated we have to learn to live with this virus. Many of you are content with shooting the messenger , instead of the message.

  2. She is a true politician she made sure there was a line in her plan to post a number so someone can RAT someone out. Gotta love that

  3. Well Ms. Hillsinger, you got one thing right: “THERE IS ONE CONSTANT…”. Unfortunately it is not what you identify, but rather it is people who deny the reality of the virus and refuse to take public health measures seriously and undermine them at every opportunity. It is bad enough when individual citizens have this attitude, but verges on criminal when elected officials do.

Representing your community means more than representing the interests of business.

  4. Contact tracing in Ontario has shown that 0.1% of cases originated through spread at retail stores and small businesses – one tenth of one percent, so why did we force a lockdown knowing this?
14 years ago Canada created an effective pandemic response plan for an event precisely like covid – why did Trudeau ignore it?
FOI requests are uncovering emails from the PMO showing them discussing lying to Canadians, to “present a new metric to distract somewhat from unattractive (vaccine) delivery numbers”. Why aren’t Canadians outraged?
Canadians need to wake up and realize that while other countries were effectively past and done with covid, because of Trudeau’s ineptness Canada was still on a downward spiral.
