Backcountry living isn’t for everyone and when you are visiting the primitive outdoor outhouse as a place to do your business, look before you sit.
I know it sounds crazy but bear with me…
An Alaskan women found out the hard way Feb 13 when she was snowmobiling with a group of people, bears can be anywhere. They has stopped at a group members Yurt when she went to the outhouse about 150 feet away.
She got the surprise of her life.
“I got out there and sat down on the toilet and immediately something bit my butt right as I sat down,” Shannon Stevens said in an associated press report. “I jumped up and I screamed when it happened.”
Her brother heard the scream and came to check on her and investigate.
“I opened the toilet seat and there’s just a bear face just right there at the level of the toilet seat, just looking right back up through the hole, right at me,” he said.
The pair quickly returned to the yurt and determined the injuries were minor.
“It was bleeding, but it wasn’t super bad,” Shannon said.
They determined the suspect left the area overnight while the slept.
“You could see them across the snow, coming up to the side of the outhouse,” she said.
Alaska fish and wildlife figured the bear scare was caused by a Black Bear possibly using the facility as a den. They base their assessment on pictures, tracks and behaviour of a bear in the area a couple days later.
So be careful if you decide to use an outhouse, do the bear minimum and check where you are going to sit. It might save you from being bit in the *** (Behind), literally!
