Rolling Pictures, The City of Sault Ste Marie and the Downtown Association is putting a call out to artists for their second ART X exhibition to be be held in April. Artists who are trying to pursue a full time career in the arts are encouraged to submit their biographies and a small sample of work.
The ART X Project was designed as a way to support local early career interdisciplinary artists by providing opportunities to display their work in a public space, gain experience in exhibition development, network with other local artists, build their portfolios, generate revenue and commission work and develop followings and public/media attention through the associated marketing of the project (both traditional and digital); while at the same time attracting local and visiting audiences into the downtown core.
“Our last show was a huge success, says Rolling Pictures Community Relations Director Robert Peace. We held a Covid friendly, ticketed and timed event that drew hundreds of people over the course of the months of November and December. “We filmed biographies for each of the artists and helped them establish online stores with the Chamber of Commerce. Guests visited for 1 hour and were treated to live music, artist discussions and complimentary snacks and beverages”.
The event is free with donations accepted at the door. All funds go directly to the artists and there are no costs or commissions to them when selling their works.
“The project supports these early career artists greatly by providing an opportunity for them to add exhibition credits to their resumes which will help them to achieve the “professional” artist designation (as defined by provincial government and their arts funding bodies) which will in turn enables them to apply for funding at all levels of government helping them on their way to career growth and sustainability”, says Arts & Culture Coordinator, Future SSM Todd Fleet.
“The Downtown Association is excited to be involved with the next Art X exhibition. These events provide another opportunity for artists to showcase their work while providing guests an opportunity to experience all that our downtown has to offer”, says Downtown Association Salvatore Marchese.
Selections will be representative of the diverse communities that SSM enjoys. Artists may apply now for any of the upcoming shows in 2021. Rolling Pictures is located at 498 Queen Street East, 2nd floor (large horse mural on the building) with a window display on the ground floor at the Downtown Association.
