Coast Guard to break the ice between Mackinac Island and St. Ignace

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – At the request of Mackinac Island community leaders, ice deterioration, and forecasted warmer temperatures, Captain of the Port Sault Sainte Marie will open the waters between St Ignace and Mackinac Island, effective 0800 EST March 07 2021.

The Coast Guard recommends that members of the public who recreate on the ice, particularly those who fish, or operate snowmobiles or all – terrain vehicles on ice-covered waters between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island, plan their activities carefully, use caution when on ice, and stay away from charted shipping channels.
