A few weeks ago, the owners of a Joe’s Sports and Surplus announced a change, one which saw them getting rid of the surplus side of the business.

The decision to move to water sports was a long time in the making, it forced them to make space in the store. While working on the transformation, they were forced to make a decision on a rather large wooden tank which was on display.

“We were going to actually give it to them, but we figured they could use the dollars more than the tank,” said Steve Meating, co-owner of the store.

The $600 check made out to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25, our local branch in Sault Ste. Marie came from both the sale of the tank, $300, and a matching $300 donation from the store.

Legion President Helen Stewart was there to accept the check, she says this is all about community support.

“Their supporting the community, we are supporting the community back, it’s kinda going around in a big circle,” said Stewart. “It’s a wonderful thing, I really truly appreciate this.”

The store hopes to run more events in the future, with the goal of giving the money raised back to the community.
