This May, Canadians from coast-to-coast will join the Pet Valu Virtual Walk for Dog Guides in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides (LFCDG), a national charity that provides Dog Guides at no cost.
The SSM Lions Club is hosting the virtual walk online for Sault Ste. Marie and has held walks in the past at Roberta Bondar Pavilion. One of our Lions Club members Hedi Kment is a guide dog owner and she will not go anywhere without her guide dog. Her dog has changed her life, gave her back her independence, her confidence and her freedom.
Typically held in-person in approximately 300 communities in Canada, the annual fundraiser event is now virtual due to COVID-19. During the month of May, Canadians will be walking, biking, running and wheeling as they participate in the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides with a goal is to raise $1.3 million.
LFCDG breeds future Dog Guides and places them with volunteer families for 12-18 months. These pups come back to Dog Guide University to major in one of the seven programs (Canine Vision, Hearing, Service for people with a physical ability, seizure response, Autism Assistance, Diabetic Alert and Facility Support for professional agencies assisting individuals in traumatic situations). LFCDG depend on this annual fundraising walk for critical support. You can make a donation or join the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides by registering online at https://www.walkfordogguides.com/. Since 1983, the foundation has provided over 3,000 Dog Guides across Canada. They are the only accredited Assistance Dog School in the world that trains Dog Guides in seven programs. The foundation receives zero government funding and relies on the support of the public to continue to provide Dog Guides.
