On Monday, May 17th , 2021, shortly after 7:30 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service crews responded to a call of a residential fire in the 300 block of Franklin Street.

Upon arrival, fire was visible from the rear of the residential occupancy. Fire crews were able to contain the fire. Upon investigation, a SSMFS Fire Prevention Officer determined the fire was caused by a poorly extinguished cigarette in proximity to combustibles.

“We want to remind residents to always dispose of smoking materials in a large metal container with sand in the bottom,” said Aaron Gravelle, Fire Prevention Officer. “Remember to clean the container regularly to avoid future incidents.”

As a result of the fire, the exterior rear of the structure and the rear deck received extensive damage. There were no injuries reported.
