It is with much thankfulness and sadness that Margaret and family announce the death of Ross Edward Hurley on Monday, July 12, 2021. Born on March 27, 1931 to May and Howard with his sisters late Marie (late Bernard), late Clara (late Dan), late Mabel (late Barney), Ruby (late Cy) and brothers late Bill (late Pat), Don (Judy) on the Hurley farm “Maple Hill” which is still farmed by his son, Allen.
In 1948 Ross married the girl across the road, Marjorie Vaughan at the young age of 17. Marjorie’s parents late Stella and late Bob and Marj’s siblings late Ruby (late Ed), late Fran (Russ), Bob (late Linda) welcomed Ross to the family.
It wasn’t long until life on the Hurley farm became a lot more active with the arrival of late Connie (Ralph), Terri (late Diane) (Ann), Allen (late Joyce) and Vivian (Don). Hurleyville was hopping with activity. Ross loved farming and coaching the local baseball team. Family and friends have wonderful memories of tobogganing on the hill behind the barn, bonfires, hockey games on the rink, making maple syrup and taffy pulls. Ross butchered for the local farmers, was the superintendent of Echo Bay United Church Sunday School and also the church treasurer. As custodian at the Echo Bay School for 26 years Ross made a skating rink for the students. He served as caretaker of the Maple Leaf Cemetery, Volunteer Firefighter, member of the Echo Bay Elks and much more. He was always ready to lend a hand.
Not everyone is lucky enough to find a second true love but in 1991 Ross married Margaret Ritchie. Her family Doug (Sharon), Mike (Sheila), Patsy, George (Wendy), Gary (Tina), Greg (Lisa) and her brother Leslie Sutherland (Meryl) from England joined the Hurley gang. For 30 years Marg and Ross travelled, golfed on their own golf course, bowled and celebrated being part of their children’s, grandchildren’s, great and great great grandchildren’s lives.
