Money may be saved if a plan by our local Fire Services comes to fruition and the City of Sault Ste. Marie is awarded the title of Regional Training Centre.
According to a report put in front of council on June 14th and the conversation during the meeting, the City could be in a position to make money down the road if we get the designation.
Councillor Hillsinger asked if we would then reach out to other departments in the area and work with them.
“I think, as Councillor Shoemaker was saying, this is a potential revenue maker for us and I think it’s excellent for our community, having this additional training,” said Hillsinger. “I’m under assumption that you’ve probably reached out to the volunteer fire departments in the area, too. Try to bring them in to our potential courses and training. Can you just elaborate on that?”
Sault Fire Services Chief, Peter Johnson, responded saying they will be included.
“We reached out to the other departments in the municipality areas, we will definitely be including them, we want to make this the Regional Training Centre,” said Johnson. “Anytime that we’re going to host a course we will make sure that they’re aware of it, if they can attend, we’re happy to have them. If there’s a course that they want to have hosted, they can recommend that and we’ll put that forward and host it for them, as well.”
There is no word on whether or not this centre would require a new building, however, some of the courses do require space to train within. We have reached out since the meeting for more comments from Johnson but have yet to hear back.
