Water is all of our business. It is the foundation of all that we do, which is why the Government of Canada is establishing a Canada Water Agency to improve freshwater management across the country. A Canada Water Agency location would have a significant economic impact, including professional full time jobs and significant economic investment. Sault Ste. Marie would be an ideal location for such an Agency.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie has partnered with the Lake Huron Collaborative’s Dr. Elaine Ho-Tassone to lead a series of eight community discussions. Eight events have been scheduled, four of which will be held in-person (maximum 20 participants at each) and four of which are online (maximum 100 participants at each), as follows:
Discussion with Organizations: August 24 at 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.(in-person) and August 26 at 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.(online)
Discussion with Indigenous Persons: August 25 at 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (in-person) and September 1 at 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. (online)
Discussion with Youth (ages 15-24): TBD
Discussion with All Community Members: TBD (in-person) and September 11 at 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (online)
The discussions will help to understand the community’s perspectives regarding having the Canada Water Agency in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as identify priorities and values for ensuring a water secure Algoma District.
The City’s Canada Water Agency Task Force invites Sault residents, Indigenous communities, and organizations within the District of Algoma to share their perspectives for a water secure future for everyone. To register for an upcoming event or to share your perspectives, complete the online form. Stay up to date on Sault Ste. Marie’s Canada Water Agency Proposal development at www.cwassm.ca. We look forward to hearing from you.
