The Soo Greyhounds announced in a press release that their 2020 Fifth Round Selection, Charlie Schenkel, signed a standard player agreement and education package with the club. Greyhounds General Manager Kyle Raftis expressed his excitement about Charlie joining the team.
“Charlie was extremely motivated coming into training camp this year. He’s a confident goaltender and based on raw skill alone – athleticism, size and ability to play the puck and command the ice, we think he’s just scratching the surface of how good he can be in our league” began the Hounds GM.
Raftis also stated, “We are very excited to partner with Charlie in helping him reach his potential and are thrilled to have Charlie as a part of our program moving forward”
Last season Charlie played for Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire, USA. The Ottawa, ON native played in 4 games posting some pretty good stats 2.62 GAA and .887 SV%.
Prior to that, the netminder also played for the Rockland Nationals U18 AAA where in 22 games, he had a record of 14-4-2 to go along with a 2.08 GAA and .924 SV%. Charlie Schenkel is also very excited to be joining the club and explained why he felt right at home here in Sault Ste Marie.
“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to play for the Soo Greyhounds. The people of Sault Ste. Marie have energy, grit and passion for hockey. I immediately felt at home as soon as I entered the GFL Memorial Gardens. Thank you to the fans, the Greyhounds staff and my billet family for making me feel so welcome” said an appreciative Schenkel.
We may see Schenkel in between the pipes as early as Saturday September 25th, as the Hounds are back at the GFL to battle the Sudbury Wolves.
