Soup Kitchen Community Centre announced today that their popular fundraiser, Great Soup
Kitchen Sleepover is back this year and is going virtual. On November 5th, they ask that you take the challenge to give up your bed for one night to help others in our community. Find a safe place to spend the night. It can be anywhere: your yard, garage, porch, terrace or a floor are all great options. Grab a sleeping bag and a box to build a shelter for the evening.
You can sleep out by yourself or get your friends, family, and co-workers involved and register as part of a team. To further enhance your experience the Soup Kitchen Community Centre will provide activities to participate in, stories to read and other ways to engage in education and advocacy. Sleeper “tool kits” will be provided to assist with fundraising goals.
Prizes will be awarded for most creative shelters and fundraising goals reached. More than 11,000 people in Sault Ste. Marie lives in poverty and struggles with food insecurity. Since the pandemic, this number is growing. This has an effect on their physical and mental health and on the fabric of our community.
The Soup Kitchen Community Centre provides services to encourage self-sufficiency and improve quality of life through reducing hunger and its effects. The three key areas of focus are;
- Address the needs of those who live in poverty by providing a safe place to eat, socialize,
get information and attend programs
- Provide a nurturing Children’s Program offering education, recreation and social activities
- Advocate and educate the public on social justice issues
The Soup Kitchen Community Centre relies on donations and fundraising in order to provide
services to our community. With your help the Soup Kitchen Community Centre can continue to support those most at risk.
