October Saves Cancer, fighting cancer one save at a time

October Saves Cancer

With the sports world kicking into high gear things are happening on and off the ice. October is cancer awareness month and goaltenders from all across North America are once again looking to make the Big Save.

Local goaltender Riley Orris is looking to make a difference by joining the October Saves Goalie Challenge.  The October Saves Goalie Challenge was started in 2014 by the Ashburn Xtreme Hockey Club based out of Virginia. The concept behind the challenge is for every save a goaltender makes, family, friends and other local supporters donate money towards cancer research.

This fundraiser helps support various charities such as;

  • The Inova Schar Cancer Institute
  • Life with Cancer
  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  • CHEO Foundation
  • Stand Up to Cancer
  • The Goalie Guild Scholarship
  • Lungevity
  • Family Reach
  • The Pink Fund

In the challenge’s first year of running goaltenders were able to make plenty of big saves, raising a solid $32,000. To date, net minders from all over North America have raised over $1.5 million dollars to help fight cancer.

Riley Orris raised the most money in Canada last year for October Saves Cancer by raising over $4,000 dollars. Once again, a local hero and big-time goaltender is looking for help for his community. The goalie has currently raised almost $600.

If you would like to help Riley make a real difference, please donate at octobersaves.org. Select the “Find a Goalie” tab then type in Riley Orris’ name. He is making a real difference being a local hero, one huge save at a time.
