Ordinarily the individuals dressed in mustard coloured bunker gear are attending to the emergency needs of our population. Today, for a few of them, is different.
Standing outside of three locations in Sault Ste. Marie, Canadian Tire, Churchill Plaza Metro and No Frills, they have traded in their fire hoses for fire boots.
“We are raising money for Muscular Dystrophy and other local charities today,” said Firefighter Chris Plotycia, the organizer of the event on behalf of the local firefighters union. “We will be at these locations until around 8 p.m..”

This is one of two times a year, according to Plotycia, that the International Association of Firefighters Union Local 529 runs a Fill The Boot campaign. He also noted, in light of some concerns about overtime, all the firefighters today were volunteering their time for the drive.
If you want to donate, you can stop by any of the locations and drop money into the boots. It will be all counted downtown this evening. SaultOnline will bring you the total raised when it is made available.
