Most of the Algoma district is under an extreme cold warning for tonight and Saturday.
Up to now, although still very cold, Sault Ste. Marie was not included in the warning. Environment Canada has now included the Sault and St. Joseph Island under the extreme warning.
The cold frigid air will stick around until at least Sunday with a gradual warm up to seasonal values. Another shot of frigid air is expecting to affect the area mid-week next week.
Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:
Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
Extreme cold tonight into Saturday morning.
Temperatures near minus 30 and extreme cold wind chill values near minus 40 are expected tonight into Saturday morning.
A reprieve from extreme cold conditions is expected beginning later Saturday morning.
Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.
Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.
Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.
Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.
If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
