Beware Of Bears In Alworth Place Area

Black Bear

Police have received several reports of a bear and cubs in the area of Alworth Place. The bears have been seen near homes and sheds in this area.

The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry has been notified via the Bear Wise reporting line. Callers did not report that the bears were aggressive or acting in a threatening manner.

If you encounter a bear, stop. Do not panic. Remain calm. Generally, the noisier the bear is, the less dangerous it is, provided you do not approach. The noise is meant to “scare” you off and acts as a warning signal. Slowly back away, keeping the bear in sight and wait for it to leave.

In emergency situations, such as a bear entering a school yard when school is in session, a bear is stalking or lingering somewhere or attacks or injures pets, call 9-1-1.

In non-emergency situations, such as a bear roaming through an area or checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored or pulling down a bird feeder, use the provincial toll free Bear Wise reporting line, 1-866-514-2327 or TTY 705-945-7641. This line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from April 1 to November 30.

  1. Why wouldnt the Bearwise Page from the Ontario Gov not tell Parents to stop letting their kids play outdoors. Ban them from Riding bikes etc. In Their own neighborhoods right here in the centre of the city. Rather than pretend everything is normal and safe to go outdoors and play.Children carry a smartphone and call 911 if a bear is aggressive. Dont run just take baby steps.Avoid eating Candy outdoors too. I mean all governments response to the crisis is pathetic and none of these parents are seen complaining.

  2. Weak Mr Trudeau. cannot control the bears , we need a leader who the very animals of the LAND will Know and respect. Weak leader is why we see so many bears wandering in the cities, no fear ,

  3. I saw a lady riding a bicycle that almost became meals on wheels. This Mama bear was aggressive as she had cubs nearby. Like a lot of other things in this city there aren’t near enough resources to take care of this. These bears should be tranquilized and moved far away.
