United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma

Gary Vipond is retiring from the United Way Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma as their CEO.  The board of directors announced his retirement in a release Thursday.

Vipond has held the position for 21 years. During his tenure, Vipond championed the 211 information and referral services for Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma district. Vipond worked on many projects, most noticeably the launch of the Harvest Algoma Food Resource Centre.  During his time he was active with the United Way Centraide Canada and United Way of Ontario.

Vipond also lead the local organization through a significant strategic transformation from an umbrella fundraiser to a community impact organization.

The United Way board of directors also announced the appointment of Lori Huston to the position of Executive Director. Huston has been an employee of the United Way for 18 years as a coordinator of various programs including manager of the Essential Services Division.

Editor’s Note: This story has been corrected to identify Mr. Vipond as retiring from the United Way and not the YMCA.
