There was some confusion lately as to whether the staycation tax credit would be extended into 2023 and although we reported that the Downtown Association had confirmed this, the province has, in fact, cancelled the program.

You can still claim your 2022 staycation expenses on your tax return for this year. though.

The temporary Ontario Staycation Tax Credit was aimed to encourage Ontario families to explore the province, while helping the tourism and hospitality sectors recover from the financial impacts of the COVID‑19 pandemic.

The Tourism Industry Association of Ontario was pushing to have the program extended and this is what we had published yesterday as coming from the Downtown Association but in fact, the province had informed the association that it was cancelled.

SaultOnline staff apologize for the confusion.

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce feels that this is a step back in progress to aid businesses across Ontario to regain funds lost in the last two years.
