The ARTSPEAKS Project presents: ARTSPEAKS Wednesday Night themed art-making sessions
∼ February 21st – June 27th ∼
2017 was a whirlwind of creation!
The ARTSPEAKS Project was a one-year pilot-project that launched in March 2017 consisting of two distinct programs intended to offer women and female-identifying individuals impacted by sexual violence, addictions and mental health challenges, the opportunity to participate in art-based-learning through cultural mentorship with professional artists.
The first of four ARTSpeaks Workshop Series began April 4, 2017, and subsequently ran until October 25, 2017. Art works produced by project participants and mentors were on display at the Ideal Art Space, 724 Queen Street East, Sault Ste. Marie, ON, from November 16, 2017 – December 16, 2017 during the ‘Re-Purposing Trauma’ exhibit.
From March 24-October 27, 2017, Art Speaks coordinators worked with over 45 women, ran 60 workshop sessions in journal making, painting, photography and sculpture, 26 Art-Drop (open studio) sessions covering a variety of art processes including colour theory and basics of design, and 6 Guest Artist Series sessions in organic mobile making, paper-making, wet felting, mixed media portraiture, collage and mask-making for a total of 92 art-making sessions overall.
The ARTSPEAKS Project lives on in 2018!
and has a new place to call home!
∼ February 21st – June 27th ∼
Sault Ste. Marie Museum (2nd floor), 690 Queen Street East, SSM, ON
♦ Breton House residents (current or former) are Wed. afternoons from 1-3:30pm (except for March 14 due to March Break)
♦ Sexual Assault Care Centre clients (or on the waiting list or former attendees) are invited to join us Wed. nights from 6-8:30pm starting this Wed. Feb. 21 til the end of June.
NOTE: A special invite to those from neither of the agencies listed, if you’ve attended any of our Four Workshop Series sessions back in 2017, you are invited to attend Wednesday nights as well.
Each session will have 2 arts mentors present, leading a themed art-making session. These structured, thematic sessions are offered for clients of our partner agencies – women/female-identifiers living with trauma and mental health challenges due to sexual violence and addictions. The studio we’re in can accommodate 10 or so creators at a time so please, if you plan on attending, give us a heads up so we can make sure we’ve got enough chairs and to let the Museum staff know who will be joining us for sessions.
A Donation from $1 – $5 to cover museum studio usage fees as well as to help keep the ArtSpeaks Project stocked with art supplies. A bucket will be left out for you to pay your fee
NO outside drinks/food except closed water bottles; due to possible slipping hazards in the studio space, if the weather is wet, you’ll be asked to remove your shoes–so bring a pair of indoor shoes.
Please Note: These sessions are by agency referral and require pre-registration.
The ARTSPEAKS Project was generously funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and represents the partnering of three local agencies invested in women’s health: Breton House, Phoenix Rising Women’s Centre and the SAH’s Sexual Assault Care Centre.
“Our core funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has come to an end, and while we spend 2018 writing new grants, we’re looking to the community we serve to lend a helping hand so that we might continue into the new year with a more compact, once weekly program.
