SSM has launched Shape the Sault to create a new Official Plan for our city. The new Official Plan will guide local decision making on land use, development and public infrastructure in Sault Ste. Marie over the next 20 years. We’re currently reaching out to the community to collect input on this important project!
At our next public open house on Wednesday, September 19 at Sault College, we will discuss key housing topics like affordable housing, housing diversity and residential intensification. In addition, Planning staff are starting a process to amend the City’s current Official Plan to add policies that permit and support ‘second units’ in single detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings, in both urban and rural areas. Second units are self-contained residential units within dwellings such as a basement apartment, or within accessory structures such as garage suites; they cannot be standalone structures. We are doing this in advance of completing a new Official Plan because of Provincial requirements and local interest related to second units.
